PELITA DAILY — On December 6, 2022, after an earthquake shook Jember and its surroundings, local residents panicked due to the South Jember Earthquake, East Java, M6.0, a depth of 10 km.

Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator BMKG Daryono reminded that the earthquake that occurred in Jember East Java needs to be watched out for. This was conveyed via his Twitter account @DaryonoBMKG and also his Instagram on 6 December 2022 after an earthquake shook Jember and its surroundings.

“The south Jember earthquake M6.0 East Java with a depth of 10 km is a type of earthquake outside the subduction zone (popularly called an ‘outer rise earthquake’) due to the fracture of the Australian plate which began to subduct under East Java. The bending of this plate triggers a normal fault.”

“This earthquake outside the subduction zone / outer rise south of East Java should be watched out for, even though it’s outside the megathrust zone, but with a downward fault mechanism it can trigger a tsunami like the devastating 1977 Sumba earthquake whose tsunami claimed hundreds of lives in South Sumbawa.”

The earthquake centered at 272 Southwest Jember, East Java, continues to occur on Tuesday 6 December.

After an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 at 13:07, there was an aftershock at 13:49 with a magnitude of 4.3. BMKG noted that the Jember earthquake had no potential for a tsunami. ●Red/Source BMKG
